The Space Shuttle Columbia Memorial honors the crew members who died when Columbia burned up on re-entry in 2003.
As we walked from Arlington Cemetery to the Iwo Jima Memorial, we had this nice view of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and Capitol.
The Marine Corp War Memorial (also called the Iwo Jima Memorial) was much larger than we expected. We had seen many photos, and thought the soldiers were life-sized, but actually they are 32 feet tall.
As mentioned earlier, it was hard to resist taking lots of photos of the Washington Monument.
We were also surprised at how the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall tapered down to a very low height at each end.
The walls are 10 feet tall at their highest point, 246 feet long, and contain the names of 51,000 soldiers.
The names begin at the vertex of the walls, below the date of the first casualty in 1959 and continue to the end of the east wall. They resume at the tip of the west wall, ending at the vertex, above the date of the last death in 1975.
We became enthralled by the reflections in the highly polished surface of the Wall.
