If you walk down the hill from Ocho Cascadas to the beach, and head north towards the center of town, you soon reach the very popular beach called Playa de los Muertos ("Beach of the Dead", named after a battle fought there a hundred years ago). There is a small fishing pier, and several beachfront restaurants and bars.

The city of Puerto Vallarta recently built a pedestrian bridge that crosses the Rio Cuale to connect the northern end of Los Muertos Beach with the southern end of the famous Malecon (which we'll get to shortly).
|
The Rio Cuale runs east/west through El Centro (the old center of town). The river flows around the narrow Isla Rio Cuale ("Cuale River Island"). This view from the bridge shows the south fork of the river, with the mainland on the right side, and the island on the left side.

Halfway across the pedestrian bridge is a stairway leading down to the island. This is well worth a detour before heading farther north.
